Toward a Unified Software Platform?

XAML: Coming soon to Mac OS X.
"...a fascinating aspect of XAML, is that it’s getting Microsoft even closer to this ultimate abstraction layer of their User Interface Framework, that just might, beyond Mono and Cocoa#, dramatically simplify the process of “porting” a Vista application to Mac OS X, and other platforms."

It looks to me that Microsoft is playing catch-up rather than being ahead - there is already XML User Interface (XUL) language that all Mozilla apps and extensions are built upon and that runs everywhere where Mozilla/Firefox is ported to.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XUL

What I like about it is that it's build using open standards - XML, RDF, CSS, ...

And then - in the future - there is the recently formed W3C Web Applications Formats working group. It's task is to build a standard based on XUL, XAML and others provided that they are willing to contribute.
